SENATOR SMITH: Did you hear the explosions?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Yes, sir; r heard the explosions.
SENATOR SMITH: How loud were they?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Oh, a sort of a rumbling sound. It was not a sharp sound — more of a rumbling kind of a sound, but still sharp at the same time. It would not be as loud as a clap of thunder, or anything that way, or like a boiler explosion, I should not think.
SENATOR SMITH: Were these explosions evidently from under the water?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: I should think they were from above. I imagined that the decks had blown up with the pressure, pulling the boat down, bow on, this heavy weight and the air between the decks; that is my theory of the explosion. I do not know whether it is correct or not, but I do not think it was the boilers. I think it was the pressure, that heavy weight shoving that down, the water rushing up, and the air coming between the decks; something had to go.
SENATOR SMITH: How many explosions did you hear?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: I am not absolutely certain of this, because there was a good deal of excitement at the time, but I imagine there were three, one following the other very quickly.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you see the captain after he told you to go below and get through the window into the lifeboat?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: No; I never saw him after that.
SENATOR SMITH: From what you saw of the captain, was he alert and watchful?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: He was doing everything in his power to get women in these boats, and to see that they were lowered properly. I thought he was doing his duty in regard to the lowering of the boats, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you see the officer of the watch that night?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Whom do you mean? I hardly know what you mean?
SENATOR SMITH: Who was the officer with you on your side of the boat?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: The second officer.
SENATOR SMITH: Mr. Lightoller?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Yes, sir.

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous entendu les explosions?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Oui, monsieur; j’ai entendu les explosions.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Quelle était leur intensité?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Oh, une sorte de grondement. Ce n’était pas un bruit aigu – plus qu’une sorte de bruit aigu, un bruit plus pointu. Il ne serait pas aussi fort qu’un coup de tonnerre, ou quoi que ce soit de cette façon, ou comme une explosion de chaudière, je ne sais quoi penser.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Ces explosions provenaient-elles manifestement de sous l’eau?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Je crois qu’elles venaient d’en haut. J’ai imaginé que les ponts avaient explosé avec la pression, tirant le bateau vers le bas, s’incliner, ce poids lourd et l’air entre les ponts; c’est ma théorie de l’explosion. Je ne sais pas si c’est exact ou non, mais je ne pense pas que ce soit les chaudières. Je pense que c’était la pression, ce poids lourd qui poussait vers le bas, l’eau qui montait, et l’air qui entrait entre les ponts; quelque chose devait disparaître.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Combien d’explosions avez-vous entendu?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Je n’en suis pas absolument certain, parce qu’il y avait beaucoup d’excitation à cet instant, mais j’imagine qu’il y en avait trois, l’une suivant l’autre très rapidement. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu le capitaine après qu’il vous ait dit de descendre et de passer par la fenêtre dans l’embarcation de sauvetage?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Non, je ne l’ai jamais vu par la suite.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : D’après ce que vous avez vu du capitaine, était-il alerte et vigilant?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Il faisait tout ce qui était en son pouvoir pour faire monter des femmes dans ces canots, et pour s’assurer qu’elles étaient bien descendues. Je pensais qu’il faisait son devoir en ce qui concerne la mise à l’eau des canots, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu l’officier de quart ce soir-là?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : De qui parlez-vous? Je ne sais pas ce que vous voulez dire?
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qui était l’officier avec vous de votre côté du canot?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Le deuxième officier.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Monsieur Lightoller?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Oui, monsieur.
